Bar Mitzvah Favors: A Hand-Painted Tile for Each Guest

A bar mitzvah or a bat mitzvah fills a room for one day. The tables are set, the photographs are taken, and then everyone drives home. What sits at each place is the one part of the day that leaves with your guests. At Tout en céramique, our studio in Le Vésinet just outside Paris, we paint that keepsake by hand: a small glazed earthenware tile carrying the name of the young person and the date of the celebration, one tile per guest, from 29 € a piece, shipping and import duties included.

This guide covers the practical questions. What goes on the tile, what a full table costs at 40, 60 or 100 guests, how text in Hebrew is handled, what arrives at your door with nothing left to pay, and how far ahead to order. Everything starts with a free mock-up, and nothing is painted before you say yes.

The favor is the part of the day that goes home

A bar mitzvah marks a boy’s thirteenth birthday. A bat mitzvah marks a girl’s twelfth. Either way, the family has been planning for about a year, and the day itself goes by fast.

The favor has a small and particular job. It sits at each place, it carries a name and a date, and it is the one object from the celebration that travels home in a coat pocket. A year of planning ends up, for the people who were there, in that one object.

What the favor aisle offers today

Search for bar mitzvah favors and most of what comes back is merchandise: printed items ordered by the box, bowls made in bulk overseas with a name added at the very last stage, keychains, tote bags. It is easy to order and it arrives fast, and for some tables that is exactly the right call.

The limit is built into the way it is made. When a thousand identical pieces come off a line, the personalization is the last thing added and the first thing that reads as generic. Nobody painted it. Nobody chose the weight of the lettering for this name.

One tile, painted one at a time

The keepsake tile is a small piece of glazed earthenware, painted by hand and then kiln-fired. It fits in the hand, and it sits on a shelf or leans against a kitchen wall. It is a decorative object, not tableware.

On the face of it: the name, the date, and a design chosen with you. The same design from one tile to the next, because a repeated design is what makes a series possible, and what makes the tiles read as a set when they are all out on the tables.

Laurence Brecher paints them in the studio, one after the other, with a brush. There is no minimum order. Forty guests is forty tiles, twelve is twelve. Each one is painted individually, so no two are identical the way two printed items are identical, and the design is fired into the glaze rather than sitting on top of it.

Text in Hebrew, said plainly

Let us be exact here, because a vague promise would not help you.

You send us the text exactly as you want to read it. It appears on the mock-up exactly as you sent it, and nothing is painted before you approve it.

You are the proofreader, character by character. Laurence letters Hebrew by hand, the same way she paints the rest of the decoration. You stay the proofreader, because the spelling of a name is yours, not ours. If the wording already exists on your invitation, send us the invitation file and we will work from that.

The design, matched to your invitation

The design is decided with you, then repeats from tile to tile. Send us the invitation and we can take its colors and its motif: a blue and a gold, a border, an initial, one simple graphic gesture that still reads clearly at a small size.

You see the free mock-up of the first tile before anything else happens. That is where it all gets settled: the size of the name, the place of the date, the balance of the design. Once that first tile is right, the series follows it.

What a table costs

The math is simple, and it is yours as much as ours. At 29 € a piece, shipping and import duties included:

• 40 guests: 1 160 €
• 60 guests: 1 740 €
• 100 guests: 2 900 €

Those totals are what you pay, full stop. There is no shipping line to add at the end, and no customs bill after it.

Prices are in euros. Your card issuer converts at the day’s rate, and we would rather not quote a dollar figure than invent an exchange rate for you.

The exact price is settled with the mock-up, before Laurence starts painting. If the total is more than you wanted to put on the tables, say so plainly. A simpler design keeps you at the entry price, and a shorter list changes the total. Forty tiles you are happy with beat a hundred you regret.

Shipping and customs, already paid

The price you see is the price for a box delivered in the United States: shipping and import duties are inside the 29 € a piece. Nothing is due when the box arrives, no customs invoice at the door, no broker fee, no surprise on the doorstep.

We handle the export paperwork and pay the duty on our side, so the box reaches you like any other parcel. Plan about a week in transit once the series leaves the studio.

On the table, or by the door

Three ways to use them, and none is better than the others.

• At each place, the tile set in the middle of the setting, so the first thing a guest picks up is the one they take home.
• On a table by the door, where each person takes one on the way out. Useful when the seating chart keeps moving until the last minute.
• A shorter series for the closest family, if you want the tiles to go to the people who traveled for the day rather than to every seat.

When to order

Each tile is painted by hand and then kiln-fired, and a series is made tile after tile, so a full table takes a few weeks in the studio. Add about a week to cross the Atlantic.

These celebrations are set about a year ahead, and that works in your favor. Write to us as soon as the date is fixed and you have a rough guest count, even if the design is not decided and the list is not final. We work the calendar backward from the day and tell you straight away whether the timing holds.

If you find this page a few weeks before the celebration, write anyway. We will tell you honestly what is possible, including when the answer is no. That is more useful than a yes that leaves you with nothing on the tables.

A larger piece for the young person

The guest tile is small on purpose. For the boy or the girl at the center of the day, the same hand can go much bigger: a ceramic star map at 369 € delivered, shipping and duties included, the night sky as it stood over the place and the date you choose, painted by hand and fired into the glaze.

It is the piece that hangs on a bedroom wall rather than sitting on a table for one evening, with the name, the date and the place written into it.

How it works, from first message to the table

1. You write to us with the name, the date and a rough number of guests. We reply usually within the hour during Paris working hours.
2. The free mock-up of the first tile arrives by email: the text, the design, the colors.
3. You approve it, or you correct it. Nothing is painted before you approve. Going back and forth is normal, that is what the mock-up is for.
4. Laurence paints the series, tile after tile, in the studio at Le Vésinet.
5. The kiln firing, which takes the design into the glaze.
6. One box to your door, with nothing to pay on arrival.
